The People

who make Ananda’s work possible in the Bay Area

A place is only as special as the people who fill it. Here, that means teachers, caretakers, volunteers, and neighbors — hundreds of people, spread across the Bay Area, all rooted in this one small piece of ground.

The teachers. In our Living Wisdom Schools, teachers work with children not just to educate them, but to help them grow into thoughtful, balanced, spiritually aware adults — an approach to education that’s been quietly shaping young lives for decades.

The Sangha staff. For more than 40 years, the staff of Ananda Sangha have taught thousands of people to meditate — leading classes, guiding retreats, offering counseling to those going through hard seasons of life, and keeping the doors open to anyone searching for something more. Many of them live right here, which is why this property matters: it's the quiet home base that makes their public service possible.

The community team. Behind the scenes, a small team keeps these grounds beautiful and well cared for — mowing, planting, fixing, maintaining a 1960s property with real love and attention. But they’re more than groundskeepers. Residents will tell you: this team is the ‘moms and dads’ of the community, the ones you call when something’s wrong, the steady presence that makes this place feel like home rather than just an address.

The volunteers. Dozens of people give their time freely here — helping in the garden, at community events, in the Sunday services, wherever a hand is needed. Their generosity is part of what makes this community run.

And the wider circle. This property is the spiritual heart of something much larger. It’s connected to:

  • East West Bookshop — a Bay Area icon since the 1960s, and a genuine center for consciousness in downtown Mountain View. It's not just for Ananda's own community; it's a place where anyone in the Bay Area can explore the wisdom traditions of the world, from any background or belief.

  • Ananda Valley Farm — an organic farm in Half Moon Bay that draws volunteers and visitors throughout the week, and serves the wider community with fresh, honestly grown produce.

  • Hundreds of Sangha members living throughout the Bay Area, for whom this community is a spiritual home base — a place to gather, celebrate, meditate, and belong, even if they live miles away.

The circle reaches further.

Ananda pilgrims from around the world draw inspiration from their visits here. They come regularly from India, Europe, New Zealand, and Central and South America. Recently, nearly 100 pilgrims from India and Europe spent a weekend here experiencing Ananda’s work across the Bay Area. They bring home a living example of what their communities could one day become.

A place steeped in peace. There’s something you can feel here that’s harder to describe than any amenity or program: the presence of the gurus, a depth of settledness built over nearly 40 years of people meditating in the same spaces, sharing meals, resolving disagreements with patience, and tending the same land season after season. It’s a quiet harmony — with each other, with neighbors, with the ground itself — accumulated one ordinary day at a time. Visitors often notice it before they can name it. Longtime residents will tell you it’s the reason they’ve stayed.

Every one of these people — teacher, staff member, groundskeeper, volunteer, farmer, bookshop clerk, or pilgrim visiting from halfway around the world — is part of the same family. And this small piece of land in Mountain View is where that family's heart beats. People know: everyone is welcome here.
